Aragats Birdwatching Excursion

Acopian Center for the Environment
Starting point Avan Villa Yerevan Hotel
Led by Dr. Karen Aghababyan

Aragats is the highest mountain of Armenia, it holds four peaks, the highest of which has an altitude 4090m. The mountain holds variety of habitats: semidesert on the bottom through mountain steppe and deciduous forest at the middle and subalpine belt on the high elevation. The Southern slope of the mountain is cut by deep canyon with high cliffs on both sides.

The variety of habitats creates a variety of birds and butterflies accordingly. Whereas the semidesert attracts various wheatears, larks and scrub robins, forest provides habitat for all the forest raptors, living in Armenia, and the cliffs host rock nuthatches, rock thrushes, and vultures. The area also attracts various butterflies in almost all the families.

On our route includes a drive from the Hotel in Yerevan with several stops in semidesert, steppe and forest area, where we will look for Isabelline and Finsch's Wheatears, Scrub Robins, Pale Rock Finches, Bluethroats, Lesser Spotted, Snake, and Booted Eagles, and Rock Buntings. Then we will reach Hamberd fortress (14th century), where we will take lunch in small restaurant. After lunch we will continue our observations in the canyon where we will expect to see Blue Rock-thrush, Bearded and Egyptian Vultures, and Golden Eagle, and continue the travel towards high mountain lake laying on 3000 m above sea level, where we will look for Alpine Accentors and Snow Finches.

The excursion will be guided by a professional ornithologist from the Acopian Center for the Environment at the American University of Armenia in Yerevan.

The best thing about Tufenkian Hotels besides excellent décor and cpmfort of rooms, is the courtesy of staff. Staff seems to be happy and proud working for a hotel, very helpful to guests and create a very warm and nice atmosphere. Thanks for that.

Dear Mr. Tufenkian

What a pleasure it is to drive at this lovely restaurant in Dilijan! We couldn't have enough of all types of food which is close to our heart - that is Western Armenian flavors and dishes.

Above all, the staff and the chef are of the highest caliber - courteous, pleasant and ready to go that extra mile for the patrons.

Dear Mr. Tufenkian

I have visited all of your hotels and I don't want to repeat what everybody knows, excellent  food and service. But I do want to commend you as an individual who has made a great contribution in our small and young republic. I wish that we had other individuals like you as I'm sure our country would truly blossom.

Johnny

It was great pleasure to be served here, where we found an excellent hospitality and warmest reception in Dilijan. The most important issue that my children get from here is sense of  fatherland. Many thanks to all Tufenkian!

Special gratitude to the amazing staff!
